Kurtis Hayfield
If this were Missouri, St. Louis perhaps, one would have to say he was
born of the river, with ghosts of Tom and Huck, of traveling preachers,
and practitioners of doom, lurking in the big muddy, fishing to find a
flashing moment of inspiration. But this is the High Plains, the Queen
City of the West, so born of hills and of dust, lets say, of landscapes
varied and howling fields, of river ponds and of city streets and scorched
alleys, of hollow buildings echoing the crumbling of the trains at three
am, before the sunrise. There is only a small river here, the pulse arrived
on the rails, was transferred to cars and trucks, dispersed. Now forgotten
in junk yards and salvage yards, hidden, quiet, waiting and wanting. From
here he sings these songs. If the void is embraced,What will it become?,spirited
along by a blood fisted engine and whispers from a porch in the minds
eye of a dead man , favors and craft passed on through decades, still fresh
in the sweat of its captors. T.A.P./ W D.H.
