Crime, punishment and Pine Box . . . .

Denvoid, once again it is time to scrape another spent year off the shoe sole. Faith . . . .Hmmmmm, where have we hidden our hearts? Under the V.C.R. remote? Between the keys of the laptop? In the dreams in the far reaches, steeped in fear of the next cruel terrorist wave? Attrition. The rate in which Denver bands have called it quits is staggering. Rumour. As usual, tripled the actual facts. Shows were cancelled, marriages sealed, drinking embraced and fate accepted. In the midst, we opened a small venue, Pine Box Construction Co. and hosted shows from 04.01.00 - 10.06.01. The following is a list of people with heart. The bands: Phantom Trigger, Infinity Waltz, Nitrous Burning Cactus Tractor, Love Handlers, Pteranadon, Brian and Chris, Czars, Antelope, The Volts, Christines, The Cigarette After, Unsound, The Siren Project, Worm Trouble, Cool Rays, Down ‘n’ Outs, J. Frede, Double Plus Down, Subarachnoid Space, Caustic Soul, Devotchka, The Bedraggled, Pinku, Orbit Service, Hellmen, Maraca 5 O, Diane French, John V., Space Team Electra and others. The shows were intimate, at times violent, but always real. Many broke up or else fell deeper into the spell. We had fun on our own terms. We finally had the sound system dialed in and word of mouth burned through the bars. Brothers and sisters - happy music scene.

Enter the paranoid ecstasy scare of 2000, the all-ages crack down, the cops, the brutal vice closing The Cat and the fearful, questioning phone calls. The vibe was blown, a smell in the air. So, we closed it. Shut up the noise and cleaned up the floors. The club worked for one reason - it belonged to everyone; not just some money-hungry yuppo or a drug-addled club owner. The musicians ran it. Thank you to all: Linda O., Debbie, Jeff Suthers, Shannon Stein, Michael Trenhaile, KAT, Todd Ayers, Adam Griffiths, Bro. I know I have left out a few, but if you came out WE KNOW! Tarmints recorded a third album fueled by a huge amount of coffee supplied, in bulk, by Vanya Duncan. About 300 gallons, many late-night hours, and three good friends later, we are still hovering somewhere between letting it be and putting it out. Our 16 track, one inch has been to the shop three times. We have burned up so many el 84 tubes that Bobby has girlfriends at guitar center. We have tried every mic available to mankind. Valco amps, Vox amps, Marshall amps, Fender amps, Pods, Maestros, Harmonys and have now come to this conclusion: No more complicated details. We will record with a real tried and true producer.

History . . . .Played great shows with Dead Bolt, Down ‘n’ Outs, Crosstops, Delta 72, Bantam Rooster. Lost Lisa Dirling in August. She needed a break from the time here and to get the hell out of Colorado. In a flash, she was gone like a ghost. After some heavy auditions we came up with a cure. Cursed as we were, our luck was astounding. The sun creeped over to our dark little corner and smiled a crooked grin. Enter Sassy Sis C. She walks like a woman, plays bass like a man. Our first show with her was outside and began the tour theme “Dirt, Wind and Fire”. (If you attended you know about the flames, smoke and the atmosphere). The tour kicked off in Salt Lake City with The Unlucky Boys, then off to Oakland, San Fran., L.A., and A.Z. Sis C. pretty much leveled everyone. As for Hoss, Class A and I . . .playing with fire as usual and having a great life. See you at the gig. K.
